Why do dems want to forgive Byrd for being KKK but continue to blast Helms and Thurmond?

Byrd tried to filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and was an officer of the KKK. Today the dems want everyone to forgive and forget yet will blast Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond at every opportunity.
