Does Aerospace Engineering have a place in today's economic climate?

I think your impression is mostly accurate...given the current economic environment, aerospace engineers are going to be in fairly low demand. Especially considering defense is also going to be cut going forward. If you are looking at money I would suggest you look at petrochemical engineering, that is the top paying engineering degree right now, and has been for the last number of years.
