Since the telescope had not been invented yet, they were called astrologers, not astronomers. They were philosophers of the breed often called "natural philosophers". Tragically, we don't have many of those guys anymore. They were well rounded, could read, write, interpret languages, discuss religion and science, and, yes, they knew their stars. A bit closer to God, I suspect, than most of the bigots who charade as godly in this day and age...
